Leeds rugby league club wins clubhouse boost

A THRIVING Leeds rugby league club has won thousands of pounds of building materials in a national competition as it moves closer to completing its new clubhouse.

West Leeds Amateur Rugby League Club were crowned champions in Selco Builders Warehouse’s Growing Grassroots competition, in conjunction with the Rugby Football League (RFL).

The club, based on Redshaw Road, has won £2,000 to spend at Selco Elland Road, as well as a visit from England players and tickets to a Test match.

West Leeds Amateur Rugby League Football Club are in the final throes of building a new £130,000 community clubhouse with changing rooms, kitchen, viewing area, toilets and storage area.

Sam Horner, a trustee at the club, said: “We were thrilled to win the Growing Grassroots competition. Some of our younger players loved meeting England stars Tyler Dupree and Caitlin Beevers. It was a really inspirational experience for them and winning tickets to the England v Tonga match was also fantastic.

“The icing on the cake, though, was the £2,000 to spend at our local Selco. Our new clubhouse is really taking shape and this will allow us to buy some of the materials we need to finish the job.

“A huge thank you to Selco and the Rugby Football League. It means so much to us to have their support.”

Selco is an official partner of the RFL and was an official partner of the Rugby League World Cup in 2022.

Bobby Bahadori, head of partnerships for RFL, said: “This was a fantastic competition and we’re delighted that such a worthy club won. West Leeds ARLFC have worked really hard to build a new clubhouse and this prize will come as a significant boost.

“Tyler and Caitlin really enjoyed meeting some of the West Leeds ARLFC players and supporting grassroots rugby, which is where it all began for them.”

Alison Wong, head of communications and sustainability at Selco, said: “We have a long and proud record of supporting rugby league over the last decade. Local clubs like West Leeds ARLFC are the lifeblood of the sport and we’re delighted to be able to help through Growing Grassroots. Their new clubhouse will be a huge benefit not only to players and supporters but for the wider community and we applaud their volunteers for their efforts.”
